It has been recommended that data analyzed in PLS should have very little smoothing. Is there a paper we can reference to support this? What is the rationale regarding this recommendation?

I am sorry that I cannot find a relevant paper at this point. However, like SPM and many other programs, I believe that it is reasonable to have:

All raw data must be properly pre-processed (registered to the same brain template, smoothed with some filters, etc.) prior to launch plsgui.

By doing pre-processing work, we can remove some artifacts and let all subjects registered on the same brain. The PLS result from preprocessed data should make more sense than un-preprocessed raw data.
